Staying Hydrated While Exercising

It’s well known that it is very important that you drink water before, during and after your workouts. I know- I used to say that I couldn’t drink before or during my workouts because it would send me right to the restroom. But I did it anyway. Eventually, my body must have decided that it was a good thing for me to do and it actually put the water where it was needed instead of going right through me. Yes, it did take awhile for my body to adapt, but it did. And now, I really miss my water jug if I forget it when I am out on a walk.

I have also learned a few other things from my water jug experiences that I want to share. I have found that carrying a water bottle in my hand is just inconvenient. I don’t like the weight of it or how it swings as I move my arms. And using a backpack to carry water was not only awkward, but it also overheated me. So, I changed to a belt that I could hook my water bottle onto.  Although it was great not to have to carry a water bottle, this unbalanced hip weight started to aggravate my back. To solve that problem, I started using two water bottles, one on each hip.  I drank from them evenly so that the weight was almost always even on each side. Now I don’t mind having to carry my water with me. I sip as I walk along, instead of drinking a lot at a time. This seems to keep my mouth moist and my body hydrated.

I hope you can use some of my experiences to help keep you hydrated as you walk in this great Michigan weather we have been having.  Happy trails to you!
