If anyone reading this knows me, you know that I'm a home body. I like my routine, having my own food choices and I'm just so much more comfortable in my own space- but that doesn't mean I don't like to travel!
When I'm away from home, I make it a point to keep some of my routine in place by finding time to work out. I'm training for the Bayshore Marathon this spring, so I knew I'd have to fit in the time for my long run over the weekend while in Louisville. I laced up my shoes, put on my tunes and went out exploring the city. It was beautiful! I ran through downtown and along the river with my adrenaline pumping the whole time, not even thinking about my mileage.
Living in Michigan, we have so many opportunities for amazing active vacation adventures. Running is super easy to do almost anywhere because you only need shoes and an open road. But the seasons give us so many options to travel around and explore different ways to stay active.
Mackinac Island is one of my favorite spots for many reasons (I did get married there❤). You never get tired of riding your bike around the island (other than on the big hill). It's challenging but so beautiful at the same time, which makes my time there seem like never enough.
Another favorite of mine is Traverse City. You can tell that people who live up there are more conscience of healthy living. From fresh food choices to all of the outdoor activities, it’s my dream to live up there one day! Snowboarding and skiing during the winter, paddle boarding in the Bay or climbing the dunes every summer. Let's not forget about wine country either ;)
But one of the more not so talked about active cities to vacation to is Detroit. Detroit? Yes, Detroit! Go a few miles out of the city and you have so many fitness studios, almost too many for my exercise loving mind to comprehend, for you to get your sweat on at. I ran my first full marathon in Detroit. Even though my legs were begging for me to stop, running through the city and past all of the old, beautiful and unique houses and neighborhoods made every somewhat painful stride open my eyes to what a spectacular city Detroit really is!
There's something magical about not knowing what you'll see when you step out of your comfort zone.
Stunning views, from old architecture to sprawling landscapes. A little farm to table restaurant with the most delicious food you've ever tasted. Walking into a new studio only to be greeted like family.
That's the beauty of stepping out of your normal routine every once in a while to go on a little adventure: you may just find something you didn't know you were looking for.
