LANSING, MI — On Wednesday, May 7 over 57,000 Michigan students joined fellow students around the country to celebrate National Bike & Roll to School Day (BR2SD).
Michigan Fitness Foundation’s (MFF) Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program staff, in collaboration with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) provided resources and planning assistance to participating schools.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recognized the event on behalf of the state with a proclamation declaring it “a nationwide celebration of biking, health, and alternative modes of transportation that encourages children to safely bike and roll to school.”
Schools organized events ranging from simple bike-to-school efforts to more elaborate activities like bike parades and bike buses. Event participation increased significantly with 195 schools registered, up from 142 schools in 2024.
“Bike and Roll to School Day emphasizes the sense of joy and adventure students experience by being active on their school commute,” said MFF President & CEO Amy Ghannam.
SRTS programs and events are designed to make it safe, convenient, and fun for K-12 students to walk, bike, and roll to and from school. Programs facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools. Events raise awareness about important issues like increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion, and concern for the environment.
Schools and communities are invited to sign up for Walk and Roll to School Day (October 8) to continue the celebration of active transportation and community connection.
