Safe Routes to Health
Safe Routes to Health (SR2H) is a program focused on addressing unmet health needs in underserved, low-income communities. SR2H is an AmeriCorps program administered by the Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF). It was developed by assessing both barriers to healthy living and opportunities to overcome those barriers.
Using a multigenerational approach to reach across entire communities, SR2H connects Michiganders to health, wellness, and physical activity programs in five Michigan counties: Wayne, Berrien, Newaygo, Chippewa, and Muskegon.
AmeriCorps service members implement seven core program components revolving around nutrition and physical activity. These components are combined to improve residents’ skills, knowledge, intentions, and access to supportive environments using practice-tested interventions.
Through SR2H, communities work together to increase access to both healthy foods and opportunities to practice healthy behaviors. The goal is to make it easier for health and fitness to be a priority for all residents and to empower them to lead longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
